Anna Dixon, the MP for Shipley, has issues a statement after it was announced that Ofwat plans to hand Yorkshire Water a £47million fine over historic sewage leaks.

Ms Dixon welcomed the news after making ending sewage dumping into the River Aire and the River Wharfe one of her priorities during the recent general election campaign.

The statement reads:

"I welcome this weeks £47 million fine of Yorkshire Water by Ofwat.

"During the general election campaign I made my unwavering commitment to ending sewage dumping in our rivers.

"It is vital that the costs of meeting infrastructure upgrades to protect the Wharfe and Aire from illegal sewage dumping are met by the company and not the customers.

"This is why the government are introducing tougher measures to clean up our rivers as outlined in the Kings Speech."
