The Member of Parliament for Shipley constituency today asked the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero about the steps they are taking to ensure that charities are supported to help those most in need this winter.
Anna Dixon, MP, raised the issue in the House of Commons after highlighting the worrying number of homes in her constituency with a poor Energy Performance Certificate rating.
The West Yorkshire politician, who has been outspoken on the need to support the most vulnerable during the upcoming winter since her election to parliament in July, said: “With 64% of homes in Shipley with an EPC rating of D or below, I very much welcome the government's commitment to the Warm Homes plan.
“The charity Groundwork provides a Warm Homes Healthy People scheme across Bradford district, installing energy efficiency measures and offering support and advice on energy bills.
“Does the minister agree with me that local charities need support to continue to help those most in need this winter?”
Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, the Minister for Energy Consumers, replied: “It is a national scandal that so many homes across the country are rated below EPC C.
“A failure of the last government to deliver the scale of home upgrades that we need, and we are determined to end the injustice of people living in cold and drafty homes.
“I completely agree with you that we must do everything we can to support vulnerable households with their energy bills this winter.
“That is why we’re providing 3.3 million households with a Warm Homes Discount, that’s why we’re working with energy suppliers to provide additional support, including through charities, and that’s why we extended the Household Support Fund.”
