The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, today emphasised Anna Dixon MP's efforts to advocate for carers while announcing a significant increase in the Carer’s Allowance earnings limit during her Budget speech in the House of Commons.
In her speech, Reeves announced that the allowance would see one of its largest increase since it was introduced in 1976, going up by £45 per week and allowing over 60,000 more carers to access it.
Delivering the new government's first budget, the Chancellor said: “I have heard representations from colleagues across this House, including my hon. Friend the Member for Shipley - about the carer’s allowance and the impact of the current policy on carers who are looking to increase the hours that they work.”
Since becoming the Member of Parliament for Shipley in July, Anna Dixon has spoken about carers and increasing the allowance earnings limit numerous times.
Speaking in Parliament before the budget earlier this month, Ms Dixon said: “There are nearly 1,200 recipients of carer’s allowance in Shipley.
“The current earnings limit leaves people vulnerable to accidentally accruing overpayments if they become ineligible for the allowance, and it also acts as a disincentive, deterring people from working as much as they would like to.”
This unprecedented change will help thousands of carers stay in employment.
The Labour administration's decision means carers can earn up to £2,340 per year more, providing a much-needed cash in the pockets of those who need it the most.
